The single Sanskrit word, karuna, written in walnut ink with a folded pen

This is a study in positive and negative space.
I began by just writing the word over and over, paying attention to the positive and negative spaces that were emerging.
Once I had completed the calligraphy part, I went back and filled in the spaces with watercolor,
giving emphasis to certain aspects of the text.
Similar to a lot of my other recent work,
I was drawn to making this a very wide piece, so after I had completed the painting,
I cut the entire page into thirds to create a wide horizontal final result.
